Everyone’s favourite spaceman from The LEGO Movie is introducing his band – Benny and the J.E.T.S. – in Justin Winn’s latest build
When he’s not building spaceships (spaceships, SPACESHIPS!) Benny likes to take time out to tour with his band, who after a number of name and line-up changes, are now known as Benny and the J.E.T.S. (Jazz-funk Emissions Transference System).
The band’s style moves between space-rock, post-bop, jazz fusion and all-out improvisation as well as an influence of funk drawing heavily on their love of Parliament and Funkadelic. The current line-up is made up of Benny (lead vocals), Glam Metal Batman (lead guitar), Blacktronica (bass), J-Bot (keys/samples), Beats by M-Tron (drums) and The Galaxy Explorers (backing vocals).
I’ve been meaning to get around to this build for a while – the idea of Elton John’s ‘Bennie and the Jets’ song reference was exciting enough for me to base a build around it and my love of Benny is no secret.
The trickiest part of the build was the stage rig structures which I tweaked until I was satisfied that they didn’t effect the overall aesthetic or distract from the immense Classic Space speakers in the background.
Removing his helmet and giving Benny a mohican was the final touch to give him a much needed rock’n’roll makeover!
