Hall of Fame: Tallest LEGO Minifigure Scale Structure

The LEGO Group appears to have some unspoken building ordinance that prohibits structures over three stories tall. Even modular buildings, for all their grandeur, have no more than this many floors. For our next entrant in the Brick Fanatics Hall of Fame we are going to answer the question ‘what is the tallest minifigure scale LEGO set?’ We are looking for the one which has most defied this unspoken rule and reached the greatest of heights. Our search need not last long, we have but to stop in Middle Earth and there find the soaring 10237 Tower of Orthanc.

Measuring in at 73cm (28″) tall, Saruman’s stronghold is breathtaking to behold. With six fully finished stories and a spire beyond that, it easily outpaces the competition. This set has two things going for it which enable it to nab the top spot. First, being a high dollar UCS set with a generous piece count gives it a lot of plastic to work with. Secondly, it forfeits a sprawling footprint concentrating all of its many parts into ascending rather than expanding.

The Tower of Orthanc is an impressive set all by itself, but it can also serve as an eye catching part of a larger build. Last year I used it in a fantasy display paired with another fabulous model, 8877 Vladek’s Dark Fortress, to create an incredibly evil looking castle. A dragon placed on top of 10237’s spires is a very satisfying and menacing touch.
