Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom trailer breakdown and LEGO speculation

The trailer has now been released for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, revealing the plot and showcasing plenty of action packed sequences – Brick Fanatics breaks it all down and considers what LEGO sets may be on the way

When Jurassic World arrived in cinemas in 2015, it beat all box office predictions to take $1.52 billion and become the third highest grossing film of all time. Not only did the film itself beat expectations, but the LEGO Jurassic World theme was much more successful than the company expected. Next year, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will continue the story and a LEGO theme will once again put it into brick filled boxes.

The trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom shows that the filmmakers continue to delight in showing no restraint, with more wonderful dinosaur inspired silliness abound and action sequences so overblown that they might out-spectacle the next Marvel movie.

Warning: There is speculation, conjecture and information about rumoured LEGO sets from here on out – do not proceed if you are sensitive to extrapolating information from seconds of footage…

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is the fifth film in the Jurassic Park franchise. The series has always touched on the idea of traditional ideas versus unrestrained science, always focusing on the dangers of relying too much on technology. This opening shot of the trailer shows vinyl records turning, underlining Owen’s preference for keeping things simple. This could also be a nod to another Michael Crichton adaptation – many episodes of the TV series Westworld open with an automatic piano playing by itself, shot in a similar fashion.

Jurassic World shamelessly followed the template of Jurassic Park, simply increasing the scale and the carnage as much as possible. It was assumed that this sequel would follow the dangling plot threads relating to the Indominus Rex, that implied more military grade dinosaurs were being genetically engineered. As it turns out, this film looks to be following the plot of Jurassic Park sequel The Lost World. In that film, Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) quipped that John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) had gone from ‘capitalist to naturalist in four years… that’s something’. It seems that Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire has gone through a similar ethical change since the events of Jurassic World.

Claire wants Owen to join on her on an expedition to rescue the dinosaurs, so that they can be preserved – this really is exactly the same thing that Hammond wanted Malcolm to do in The Lost World. Like Malcolm before him, Owen is reluctant – so it seems Claire will use someone he loves to convince Chris Pratt’s character to get involved. Instead of Julianne Moore, this time it is a raptor called Blue. There is no accounting for taste.

Where this will differ from The Lost Word is that there is a much more pressing time crunch. A volcano is going to erupt on Isla Nublar, wiping out all of the dinosaurs. It will certainly allow for some nice dinosaur extinction imagery, which will be great for cinema goers. It was pretty irresponsible of the InGen shareholders to allow their theme park to be built on a volcanic island – then again, these guys did allow the guys in charge to open a zoo full of dinosaurs…

This is the first shot in the trailer that seems destined to become a LEGO set, given the penchant for volcanoes that the design team seems to have. Hopefully the lessons learned from 60124 Volcano Exploration Base, 70631 Garmadon’s Volcano Lair and 70323 Jestro’s Volcano Lair will mean this is actually a decent set.

It would not be much of a film if Claire did not succeed in persuading Owen to go with her to the abandoned Jurassic World island of Isla Nublar. This plane would make for a fun little LEGO set, with a couple of pteranadons included to add some jeopardy.

Fallen Kingdom. Got it?

Like in The Lost World, these people are daft enough to think that a few heavy duty vehicles will make up for the lack of infrastructure, safety procedures and huge enclosures. It is good news for the LEGO Group though – the challenge with these films is the lack of interesting locations and vehicles. The dinosaurs are awesome, the characters are sometimes intriguing, but neither of those makes for a construction toy (at least for as long as moulded beasts are the fashion) – so boring containment trucks like these are the only real option for LEGO sets.

Okay, some of these vehicles are less boring. This one looks ready to contain a captured dinosaur, providing some interactivity between the LEGO vehicle and the creature that presumably will be included with it. Note the Compsognathus dinosaur at the front of the shot – these tiny fellows were introduced in the opening sequence of The Lost World.

One of the drawbacks to a LEGO theme based on the Jurassic Park franchise is that the huge dinosaurs like the Brachiosaurus are unlikely to ever make it into a set. It would be nice if this memorable beast was though, as it features in many of these films as a symbol of hope. The armoured vehicle seen in this shot is a much more realistic candidate for a LEGO set.

‘When the Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don’t eat the tourists,’ Ian Malcolm memorably quipped to John Hammond in Jurassic Park. When Fallen Kingdom is released, it will be 25 years since that original film wowed cinema goers. Jeff Goldblum is back to reprise arguably his most well known role, hopefully bringing with him the character’s sardonic style. In the trailer he is only shown in a hearing scene, so fans will be hankering for him to have a bigger role than this in the movie. At least for LEGO enthusiasts, this means an Ian Malcolm minifigure is a shoe-in.

If these guys brought a Tyrannosaurus Rex back to the mainland, then this really is following The Lost World very closely – that film ends with the same dinosaur causing mayhem in San Francisco.

Or does dino chaos ensue on the boat ride home? It looks like the characters are looking out at the volcano erupting and smothering the island, presumably on their way back to the mainland. Those containers beneath them presumably hold the dinosaurs, so maybe the T-rex gets its cage opened during this journey. Although such a vessel seems a logical LEGO set choice, it would have to be huge to accommodate multiple dinosaurs.

This creepy looking Baryonyx seems to have gotten free on the boat, unless this occurs on the island before the volcano erupts.

Let’s hope fans get this beast as a LEGO dinosaur, as it would be a nice new addition to the line-up.

Owen reunites with Blue in an inevitable scene. Will it go well? We will find out in the movie, but in the meantime check out the wrecked vehicle in the background – that is one of the automatic cars from the original Jurassic Park. Rather than give fans the boxy armoured drives seen in other shots, it would be great if the LEGO Group celebrated the 25th anniversary of Jurassic Park by releasing one of these iconic vehicles. Preferably not wrecked.

This trailer seems to give an awful lot away – the volcano erupts, presumably not very early in the film.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom may have the greatest number of dinosaurs ever seen in a Jurassic movie, with so many different species running away from the erupting volcano. The LEGO Group has so many new dinosaurs to choose from that this new theme has a real opportunity to expand the range of extinct brick beasts.

The Carnotauros demands to be included in one of the new LEGO sets.

The Ankylosaurus, seen on the right of this shot, would be another great dinosaur to see LEGO-ised. The Gyrosphere, that Claire and friend are using to escape, looks likely to appear again in a LEGO set thanks to its role in the film.

Things look rather dire for the inhabitants of Jurassic World.

Jurassic_World_Fallen_Kingdom_trailer_21

The ante really is being upped to the max – both the humans and the dinosaurs are forced into the ocean to escape the volcano. The filmmakers will need a clever way for them to escape this situation. Jurassic World was a very silly film indeed, so some suspension of belief might be required.

Jurassic World is due for release in the UK on June 8, 2018 and in the USA on June 22, 2018. The LEGO sets based on the film are expected to be launched in April 2018.
