LEGO Star Wars 75166 First Order Transport Speeder Battle Pack review

Is a First Order officer recolour and a new Stormtrooper shield enough to persuade you to part with your cash for 75166 First Order Transport Speeder Battle Pack? Probably

Price: £11.99 / $14.99 / €17.99 (DE)  Pieces: 117 Available: Now

‘TRAITOR!’ – remember the Stormtrooper who yelled this at Finn before taking him and his newly-acquired lightsaber on with a staff, and almost winning? You may have noticed that a lot of the other versions of this character in toy form also came with a shield, even though it did not appear on screen.

Well, it was seemingly meant to be – or maybe it’s due to be in The Last Jedi – as now the LEGO Group has provided a version of the First Order goon with a shield. Specifically there are two of them in 75166 First Order Transport Speeder Battle Pack. Each is a single mould piece with a handle grip on the inside and four studs and a small printed emblem on the front.

Gleaned from Ralph McQuarrie’s original concept for the Stormtrooper, it’s a neat look and one that has translated nicely into LEGO form here. It does mean, though, that we get two Stormtroopers to hold said shields and staffs, so that just as 75132 First Order Battle Pack begins to slip from shelves, we are presented with an incoming replacement battle pack with a very similar look to it.

Is this a case close to Malibu Stacey levels of ‘a new hat!’? Possibly, but it’s worth bearing in mind that 75132 aside, this design of Stormtrooper is only available in 75103 First Order Transporter and 75139 Battle on Takodana, as well as 75104 Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle too if you remove the pauldron, which are some of the more expensive releases of recent years in the LEGO Star Wars line. So, assuming you don’t, here’s a good opportunity to build up your numbers.

And if you do already have eight boxes of 75132, then there are other appeals to 75166, namely the First Order Flametrooper, previously only available in 75103 too, and the recoloured First Order officer, in dark blue for the first time, and onscreen accurate.

The speeder is also a clever design, offering a neat transport for at least two minifigures, and the option for those Stormtroopers to ditch the mini stud shooters in favour of the staff and shield.

In all, whilst it may be disappointing that we truly only have one new minifigure design in this battle pack, that shield design and the option to build up an army of Flametroopers means that once more, you can’t overlook this latest £11.99 LEGO Star Wars release.
