There have been more Jedi Starfighter sets than Snowspeeders. The LEGO Group chose to mix things up this year by releasing a specialised craft for the diminutive Jedi Master Yoda, but is it different enough to be worthwhile?

Price: £19.99 / $24.99 / €29.99 Pieces: 262 Available: Now

Many AFOLs were eventually won over by the animated series, The Clone Wars, that launched in 2008. Characters such as Ahsoka, initially unpopular, became form favourites. For a lot of us, the highlight of the series was the darker and more mature Lost Missions collection of episodes that never aired but instead streamed on Netflix. Yoda specifically was a main focus of one story arch, and the unaired season culminated with him embarking on an odyssey of sorts to uncover secrets about the Force. 75168 Yoda’s Jedi Starfighter is based on the craft that Yoda and Artoo take on their galaxy spanning journey.

In evolutionary science anthropologists will sometimes discuss transitional forms, creatures that were links in the chain between, for example, apes and modern man. Such a phrase could be easily applied to Yoda’s starfighter, an entrant in the evolution from wedge shaped Jedi Starfighters to TIE Fighters, specifically the TIE Interceptor in this case. Split wings mounted around the cylindrical canopy are unmistakable, even the colour scheme cannot hide them. The wing’s angles on 75168 Yoda’s Jedi Starfighter are achieved through a simple but effective pin system. Yoda alone can pilot the craft, as a regular sized minifigure will not fit in the miniaturised cockpit – making it true to the onscreen version of the ship.

With a price of £19.99 and a piece count of 262, something had to give with 75168 Yoda’s Jedi Starfighter and it is the minifigure count. Only R2-D2 and the diminutive Jedi Master are included, but he is fantastically detailed, easily the best LEGO version of Yoda released. The model itself is substantial enough that it does not feel like anyone has been cheated, and that is more than can be said for the other 2018 Jedi Starfighter set. Children, or big children, will find a lot to love here too as Yoda’s ship is highly swooshable.

If you are a fan of The Clone Wars, especially the Lost Missions, this is a set that you will not want to miss as it is likely the only LEGO version of this craft. Why the LEGO Group chose to reach into the back catalogue for material considering Rebels is the current animated series is baffling – but I am glad they did as this is a delightful model that is well worth the price.
