LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures ‘The Tower of Alistan Nor’ review

The wait is finally over! New episodes of LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures are back and things naturally picked up where we last left off…

Title: The Tower of Alistan Nor  Season: 2  Episode: 3  Original air date: July 31, 2017

In the previous episode, Rowan Freemaker dreamt of a ship that’s capable of helping the Rebellion win the war against the Empire. Like most dreams, however, the details are unclear and fuzzy, so in ‘The Tower of Alistan Nor,’ Rowan travels to the abandoned ruins of an ancient Jedi city in order to get the clarity and the inspiration he needs to start building the Arrowhead.

Minor spoilers may follow, so watch the episode before reading the review if you are spoiler sensitive.

It’s great to see Rowan embarking on a journey of self-discovery of sorts, since putting the Arrowhead together isn’t going to be an easy task. It’s not a matter of taking a bucket of bricks and replicating what he saw. There’s a level of art and sophistication involved, so there are going to be hurdles along the way in order to achieve this goal.

On this particular journey, Kordi and Zander were left out because they found themselves more involved with the Rebellion’s efforts rather than focusing on their little brother. It’s a lesson they end up learning by the episode’s end, so Rowan will no doubt have his siblings by his side offering their full support in the future. Still, the scenes of Kordi and Zander building a ship to get to Rowan were hilarious, especially given what ultimately happened once Rowan arrived back home.

Another comedic duo throughout the episode were Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, going back and forth on M-OC’s progress. It’s always the perfect amount of banter between those two characters, and M-OC’s quick and logical responses to both of them add to the hilarity of the situation.

Roger also had a handful of sarcastic and witty comments that somehow get better and better with each episode. His ‘I should just activate silent mode anytime we go anywhere’, just before the heroes are attacked by gundarks, is a personal favourite that comes to mind.

The best part of the episode, however, was the introduction of an ancient Jedi city on the planet of Alistan Nor.

In a vision, Rowan saw what the settlement looked like before it was abandoned and taken over by the jungle. Not only that, but Quarrie revealed a bit of knowledge about the Jedi and how there was a group known as the Force Builders, an ancient Order devoted to creating the finest art, architecture, and starships. This series always does a fantastic job of expanding the galaxy in new and surprising ways. Rowan is not just a Force user, but he’s a Force Builder. The concept (as well as the series itself) demonstrates the perfect balance between Star Wars and LEGO, with one not overpowering the other.

The fight between Rowan and M-OC was also fun to watch, especially since M-OC was using Emperor Palpatine’s latest gift: a double-bladed spinning lightsaber. Rowan proved himself to be resourceful, but luckily for him and the rest of the gang, the gundarks managed to buy them enough time to escape. With each encounter, though, M-OC is learning and acquiring more data, so it’ll only be a matter of time before Rowan’s luck runs out.

Putting that ominous thought aside, now that Rowan understands and sees clearly what he needs to build, the next step is acquiring the materials necessary to put the ship together, and again, it’s not as easy as picking up spare parts from the shelf. Rowan and the others need to locate ancient and rare pieces, while also trying to evade M-OC’s attacks.

All that said, this was another great episode filled with wonder, action, and beautiful visuals. There’s no doubt that the rest of the adventure only gets better from here.
