#ThrowbackThursday – LEGO Football Championship Challenge

We got back to 2000 this week in our regular #throwbackthursday column. The arrival of the German football team series isn’t the first time football (soccer to the uneducated) and LEGO have mixed. There was a short lived theme back at the turn of the century, LEGO teamed up with big brands like Adidas and famous footballers like Zidane. You could buy team coaches, pitch extensions and stands. You could have a full blown stadium with the various sets.

There was also different training sets, such as Point Shooting. One thing I loved to do as a youngster is build big football stands and I know I would have loved this, as I used Subbuteo with LEGO stands back in the day. But LEGO actually did their own version called  Championship Challenge. You could build your pitch with advertising boards and then attached the two teams to positions on the pitch and actually play a game of football and with other sets you could extend pitch to have 11 a side and buy extra players.

This retailed at $50 USD back when it was released. The current price on Bricklink for a MISB is only £66. So if you are a football fan you could grab it and start MOC’ing your own football stadium

Did you own any of these and if so what was it like to play?
