Young fan helps design LEGO Friends playground set

A Heartlake Playground set is coming to the LEGO Friends range – with the initial design provided by eight year old fan Sienna. She has been announced as the winner of the Global LEGO Friends competition, which asked young builders to come up with a new addition to Heartlake City. The winning design will now be turned into an official product by the LEGO Friends design team.

Toy News shared the news of Sienna’s success:

The LEGO Friends team had to select ten finalists, which saw Sienna’s Heartlake Playground declared as the winner.

“It has been inspiring to see so many children participate and use their imagination to come up with such fun and relevant ideas for a LEGO Friends set,” said Rebecca Snell at LEGO UK. “We are delighted for Sienna, her Playground theme is the perfect addition to Heartlake City, after all, every city should have a playground.”

Following the announcement, Sienna and her family are heading to LEGO Group HQ in Denmark, where she will work with the design team who will turn her idea into a reality. The Heartlake Playground set will hit the shelves in Toys R Us, LEGO retail stores and LEGOLAND stores in September.

Is anyone else slightly mystified by this choice of winner? My daughter and I looked through many of the entries, some of which showed some fantastic creativity and brilliant designs which would have been a delight to build and play with. But the winning entry is fairly basic in comparison and has many of its major elements lifted from existing models. Clearly that is what Lego wanted but it’s not particularly inspiring for future competitions, is it?
